Web Site Tips

Here are some tips that can help you have a more productive web site.

Size does matter. But bigger is not always better when it comes to the size of your web pages. Visitors to your site will become frustrated with continually having to wait more than 10 seconds for your pages to load. It's a good idea to aim for around 35Kb per page. Try to keep the home page trim, as this is the first impression your visitors will get. Particularly watch out for the format and file size of images, as they can really chew up kilobytes.

Use secure Internet protocol for any payment process. Security of credit card data and personal details is a big concern for most customers. Current encryption standards do a great job in protecting data that is transmitted over the Internet. In most cases of security breaches at web sites, personal or card details have been stolen from information stored on the businesses web site, not from the payment process itself. So if you need to keep sensitive information be extremely careful with your data storage. Learn more about the ePayment Process here.

Give the people what they want. Visitors come to your site looking for something...usually information. Assess what your visitors are looking for and provide a sensible way for them to find it. Informative, well-written content, with easy site navigation, creates satisfied visitors who may then be converted into real customers.

Customers like to know where and who you are. Make sure you display a customer service telephone number on all sales pages (toll free if possible). Research has shown 25% of customers find this an encouragement to place their order. Clearly display your company contact details…make it easy for customers to contact you in the offline world as well as through your web site.

Use resource-intensive graphics very carefully. In many cases resource-intensive graphics (like Flash demo's) may look great and be very creative, but add very little to the visitors experience at your web site. Slow loading pages and the need for plug-in's are a real turn off for visitors.

Use META tags correctly for all your pages to get the best results from search engine spidering. Go further than just your home page, think outside the box to create relevant description and title tags and alternative keywords for other pages that will bring more traffic to your site.
